What it is

The Canadian Dental Care Plan, in plain terms

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a federal program that helps eligible Canadian residents without private dental insurance pay for dental care — including dentures. As of 2026 it is open to all eligible Canadians regardless of age. For denture patients, it has changed the question from “can I afford this?” to “let’s check what you’re covered for” — which is exactly where we start every consultation.

Eligibility

Who qualifies for CDCP

Closer to Lanark County? See CDCP at our Perth clinic or CDCP in Carleton Place.

Four things determine eligibility. If all four are true, you can likely use CDCP toward your dentures — and the quickest way to be sure is the eligibility check below.

65 or older? Ontario also runs a separate provincial program — see how the Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program compares with CDCP.

Canadian resident for tax purposes

You file taxes in Canada and are a resident here for tax purposes.

Filed your latest tax return

You — and your spouse or common-law partner, if applicable — filed last year’s return.

Adjusted family net income under $90,000

The amount CDCP reimburses steps down as income rises (see the table below).

No access to private dental insurance

CDCP is a coverage of last resort — it can’t be combined with employer, pension or spousal plans.

Five quick questions, about a minute. No email, no login, nothing saved — you’ll see your likely eligibility and coverage tier, then how to apply.

Question 1 of 5

Are you a Canadian resident for tax purposes?

You file taxes in Canada and live here for tax purposes.

Have you filed your latest tax return?

You — and your spouse or common-law partner, if applicable — filed last year’s return.

What’s your adjusted family net income?

Line 23600 on your last tax return. Your CDCP coverage tier depends on this.

Do you have private dental insurance?

CDCP is a coverage of last resort — it can’t be combined with private insurance.

The percentage above is of CDCP’s own fee guide, which sits a little below standard denturist fees — so there’s usually just a small difference to cover. We’ll walk you through it and confirm any amount in writing before treatment, and depending on your situation, other coverage may help with part of it too.

Estimates use the 2026 CDCP fee guide. Actual eligibility and reimbursement are confirmed by Sun Life (the CDCP administrator) at the time of treatment. You can confirm any CDCP provider through Sun Life’s official provider search — or call us and our team will check for you.

How much CDCP pays

How much will the plan pay?

Good news first: for most eligible patients, CDCP covers the large majority of the cost — your share simply depends on your family income. Here’s how the brackets break down, using the same tiers as the checker above.

Program details current as of July 2026 — CDCP rules can change, so always confirm on the official Government of Canada page.

How to apply

Applying for CDCP — three steps with Service Canada

Applications are handled by the Government of Canada, not our clinic. It takes about 10–15 minutes online, or you can apply by phone. Once you’re approved, Sun Life mails you a CDCP member card — then you’re ready to book.

  1. Confirm you qualify

Use the eligibility check above, or review the four criteria on Canada.ca. You’ll need your Social Insurance Number and last year’s tax details.

  2. Apply online or by phone

Apply through Service Canada. You’ll get a confirmation and, once approved, a Sun Life CDCP member card by mail with your start date.

  3. Book with us & bring your card

Once your coverage is active, book a denture consultation — no referral needed. We confirm your tier and bill CDCP directly.

What Service Canada will ask you for

This is for the government application only — our clinic never asks for your SIN or tax details.

  • Social Insurance Number — for each person applying
  • Last year’s tax return — your adjusted family net income comes from it
  • Date of birth & home address — for everyone on the application
  • After approval: Sun Life welcome letter — includes your CDCP member card; bring the card to your first visit

Opens the official Government of Canada CDCP site in a new tab. We don’t collect or submit your application — we just help you use the coverage once you’re approved.

What’s covered

What the CDCP helps cover

The Canadian Dental Care Plan covers a broad range of dental care — not just dentures. Here’s what it helps pay for. We confirm your exact coverage and any copay in writing before treatment begins.

Complete dentures

Upper, lower, or complete sets to replace an arch of missing teeth.

Partial dentures

Metal-framework or flexible partials to replace several missing teeth.

Relines & repairs

Refitting a loose denture or fixing a cracked one — relines are covered on a yearly basis.

Tooth extractions

Removing teeth that can’t be saved — often the first step before new dentures.

Fillings & restorations

Repairing teeth affected by decay or damage.

Exams, cleanings & X-rays

Routine check-ups, scaling, and diagnostic imaging.

At Smile Denture, our licensed denturists provide the denture treatment and tooth extractions in our Ottawa clinic. Fillings, cleanings, and other general dental care are covered through your dentist — we’ll happily point you in the right direction.

How it works at Smile Denture

From coverage check to new dentures

We handle the CDCP side so you don’t have to decode it. Here’s the path from your first call to finished dentures.

1

Check coverage

Use the eligibility check or call us. We confirm your CDCP tier and what your dentures are likely to cost you.

2

Consultation

A licensed denturist examines your needs and recommends the right denture — no referral required.

3

Written estimate

You get the plan in writing, with CDCP billing codes and any out-of-pocket amount, before anything begins.

4

Treatment & direct billing

Our denturists and on-site lab make your dentures, and we bill CDCP directly — you settle only any remaining portion.

Another coverage path

Hurt at work? WSIB may cover your dentures

If your tooth loss or denture damage came from a workplace injury, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) may cover your denture treatment — separately from CDCP. Here’s how it works.

A simple repair or reline can often go ahead without prior authorization; replacements need WSIB approval. The details are in the common questions below — and we handle the WSIB paperwork with you.

Not sure which coverage applies to you? We’ll help you sort out CDCP, WSIB or private insurance at your consultation.
