A denture that stays where it should
An implant-retained denture is a removable denture that clips onto two or more dental implants for a more secure fit than a conventional denture. If a regular denture feels loose, or you'd simply like more stability, an implant-retained denture connects to implants in your jaw. The result is a fit that holds firm while you eat and speak — without relying on adhesive.
Anchoring the denture to implants is what changes the day-to-day:
- Stays secure — no adhesive The denture attaches to your implants, so it holds firmly in place without denture paste.
- A more stable, comfortable fit Because it’s anchored to bone rather than resting on soft tissue, it tends to move less while you eat or speak, and many people find chewing and speaking feel more natural and secure.
- Clear about coverage first We confirm your CDCP or insurance coverage and explain any out-of-pocket cost before treatment begins.
Implant-retained dentures come in a few designs — snap-on overdentures that click onto the implants and lift out for cleaning, bar-retained versions that clip onto a slim bar joining the implants, and fixed full-arch options that stay in place. Your denturist will recommend the design that suits your jaw and your day-to-day. Curious about the bar option? See our guide to bar-retained implant dentures.
Types of implant dentures
“Implant-retained denture” isn’t one single design — a few configurations exist, each attaching to your implants a different way. Your denturist will recommend the type that suits your jawbone, gum health, and daily habits.
Ball- & locator-retained (snap-in)
Each implant gets a small rounded attachment, and the underside of the denture holds matching sockets. Line the denture up, press it into place, and it snaps on; lift with steady, even pressure and it snaps off. This is often the simplest configuration and can work with a fairly small number of implants. Most patients remove it nightly, the same as a conventional denture.
Bar-retained
Instead of each implant working alone, a slender metal bar shaped to your jaw connects the implants, and the denture clips onto that bar. Splinting the implants together distributes chewing forces across the group instead of concentrating them on one attachment point. A bar adds a step to the lab work and fitting appointments, which shows up in the investment — see our guide to bar-retained implant denture cost.
Fixed full-arch
A fixed implant-supported denture is secured to the implants with screws and isn’t designed to come out at home — you clean it in place, much like natural teeth, with our denturists checking the fit at scheduled visits. Fixed options generally need more implants, placed with more precision, so suitability is something an assessment needs to confirm. See our guide to All-on-4 implant dentures for the fixed full-arch approach.

Can’t find your question?
-
A regular denture rests on your gums, while an implant-retained denture attaches to dental implants in the jaw. That connection holds the denture securely so it doesn’t slip, and most patients find it more stable and comfortable when eating and speaking.
-
A snap-on overdenture clicks onto your implants and lifts out for cleaning. A fixed full-arch is a permanent bridge attached to the implants that stays in place and is brushed like natural teeth. Your denturist will help you decide which approach suits you as part of your plan.
-
No. Because the denture attaches to your implants, it stays secure without denture adhesive — one of the main reasons people choose this option.
-
Coverage varies, and implant treatment is handled differently from standard dentures. We check your CDCP or insurance coverage first and explain any estimated out-of-pocket cost before treatment begins, so you can plan with no surprises.

Our denturists design and fit the denture that attaches to your implants. The implants themselves are placed surgically by a partnering dentist or oral surgeon, who also oversees healing before we fit your denture.

Implant dentures come in a few configurations. A ball- or locator-retained denture snaps onto individual implants and comes out nightly for cleaning. A bar-retained denture clips onto a slim bar joining several implants. A fixed full-arch denture is secured with screws and stays in place, cleaned like natural teeth. Your denturist will recommend the design that suits your jawbone.

A conventional denture rests on your gums and stays in place through suction and gum contact — because it doesn’t need a surgical step, it’s generally the faster route to a finished denture. An implant-retained denture attaches to dental implants in your jawbone, which tends to hold it more securely while you eat or speak, but the path involves an assessment, implant placement, a healing period, and a higher overall investment. Dental implants themselves aren’t covered by CDCP, though the denture portion of your treatment may be eligible.
-
The right configuration depends on factors your denturist assesses in person — how many implants your jawbone can support, whether you’d rather remove your denture nightly or clean it in place, your gum health, and your day-to-day habits. Two patients with a similar gap in their smile can reasonably end up with different recommendations once a denturist has looked at their bone and bite. A free consultation is the clearest next step to find out what suits you.
-
A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone by a dentist or oral surgeon. Over a healing period, bone bonds to the post in a process called osseointegration, turning it into a stable anchor. Once healed, an attachment — a ball, a bar, or a fixed connector — links the implant to your denture, so it gets its grip from bone rather than gum tissue alone.
-
Implant placement is a surgical step done by a dentist or oral surgeon; our denturists design, fit, and adjust the denture that attaches to the implants. Getting started doesn’t require a referral — you can book directly with one of our denturists, and we coordinate the surgical side with trusted dental partners as part of your overall plan.
